An axe is a tiered Minecraft:tool that can quickly break wood-related and certain plant-related blocks, or be used as a melee Minecraft:weapon that temporarily disables Minecraft:shields. Axes have unique interactions with Minecraft:logs and blocks crafted from copper, turning them into stripped logs or removing a level of oxidation/coat of wax, respectively.

Minecraft:Mobs that wield axes, such as vindicators or piglin brutes, perform crushing blows should they hit a player's shield. The melee attack of a Minecraft:warden also performs a crushing blow should it connect against a player's shield.

Using an axe on a Minecraft:log (stem), Minecraft:wood (hyphae) or block of bamboo causes it to become a stripped log (stripped stem), stripped wood (stripped hyphae), or block of stripped bamboo. Using an axe on a copper-based block or a copper golem removes one layer of oxidation or wax from the block or the golem. This consumes one point of durability from the axe.

An axe can be repaired in an Minecraft:anvil by adding units of the tiers' repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% the axe's maximum durability, rounded down. Two axes of the same tier can also be combined in an anvil. Both methods preserve the axe's enchantments, unlike by crafting to repair.

Template:For Template:Infobox item

An axe is a Minecraft:tiered Minecraft:tool that can quickly break wood-related and certain Minecraft:plant-related blocks, or be used as a melee Minecraft:weapon that temporarily disables Minecraft:shields. Axes have unique interactions with Minecraft:logs and blocks crafted from Minecraft:copper, turning them into Minecraft:stripped logs or removing a level of Minecraft:oxidation/coat of Minecraft:wax, respectively.

Variants

There are seven axe variants:

Obtaining

Wooden, golden, stone, copper, iron, and diamond axes are crafted using 2 Minecraft:sticks and 3 identical units of tool material. This recipe can be flipped horizontally.

Crafting

Smithing

Generated loot

Template:LootChestItem

Villager gifts

Template:Exclusive Toolsmith Minecraft:villagers occasionally throw stone axes at players with the Minecraft:Hero of the Village status effect.

Weaponsmith Minecraft:villagers occasionally throw either stone, gold, or iron axes at players with the Minecraft:Hero of the Village status effect.

Usage

Breaking

An axe is used to break Minecraft:logs, blocks derived from wood and some other blocks faster than by using other tools. An axe uses 1 durability to break 1 block. For blocks that break instantly, it uses 0 durability.

Speed

The following table summarizes the speed at which axes of different qualities perform.

Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row Template:Breaking row

Attacking

Pressing Template:Control while holding an axe inflicts damage on both mobs and other players. Upon damaging a mob or player, the axe's Minecraft:durability decreases by 2.

Attacking a Minecraft:boat or a Minecraft:minecart with any axe tier instantly destroys it Template:Only, without decreasing the axe's durability.

Disabling shields

File:Crushing blow (inflicting).gif
Performing a crushing blow.
File:Crushing blow (receiving).gif
Being hit by a crushing blow.

Axes have the special ability to do crushing blows, which disable the use of the target's shield for 5 seconds. Crushing blows are triggered only against targets that are actively holding their shield up.

Crushing blows affect all of the target's shields, rather than affecting only the one that was being used. Crushing blows do not trigger against targets whose shields are not yet past their 250ms activation delay. Crushing blows are triggered regardless of attack cooldown percentage and, unlike sweep attacks, they can be triggered at the same time as critical hits and sprint-knockback attacks.

Crushing blows work by inflicting a 5 second Minecraft:use cooldown. When a shield is stunned, it cannot be used by right clickingTemplate:Only or sneakingTemplate:Only. Performing a crushing blow does not consume durability from the axe, in the same way that other attacks do not consume durability when they're blocked by a shield.

Minecraft:Mobs that wield axes, such as Minecraft:vindicators or Minecraft:piglin brutes, perform crushing blows should they hit a player's shield. The melee attack of a Minecraft:warden also performs a crushing blow should it connect against a player's shield.

In the Minecraft:Java Edition Combat Tests, the stun duration from crushing blows is lengthened by the Minecraft:Cleaving Minecraft:enchantment, at an additional 0.5 seconds per level with a maximum level of III.

Statistics

Java Edition

Template:IN, wooden, stone, and copper axes have an attack speed of 0.8 (1.25 seconds), iron axes have an attack speed of 0.9 (1.111 seconds), and golden, diamond, and netherite axes have an attack speed of 1 (1 second). They have the following statistics:

The durability is halved then ceiled because axes take double durability when used as a weapon, and the last 1 durability can also deal damage. Stripping and scraping

Template:Control an axe on a Minecraft:log (stem), Minecraft:wood (hyphae) or Minecraft:block of bamboo causes it to become a Minecraft:stripped log (stripped stem), Minecraft:stripped wood (stripped hyphae), or Minecraft:block of stripped bamboo. Template:Ctrl an axe on a copper-based block or a Minecraft:copper golem removes one layer of Minecraft:oxidation or wax from the block or the golem. This consumes one point of Minecraft:durability from the axe.

Template:IN, if the player holds a Minecraft:shield in their Minecraft:off-hand and attempts to strip/scrape a block with an axe, they will enable the shield instead of stripping/scraping with the axe. However, if the player sneaks, they can strip/scrape blocks as normal.

Repairing

Template:Crafting Template:Grinding

Anvil repair

Template:Main Template:Repairing with Anvils An axe can be repaired in an Minecraft:anvil by adding units of the Minecraft:tiers' repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% the axe's maximum durability, rounded down. Two axes of the same tier can also be combined in an anvil. Both methods preserve the axe's Minecraft:enchantments, unlike by crafting to repair.

Enchantments

An axe can receive the following enchantments:
