Minecraft:Controls

From SAS Gaming Wiki

Template:Redirect Template:Page image Minecraft:Minecraft offers controls tailored for different input methods. While Template:Edition is playable only with a keyboard and mouse, Template:Edition has a wider variety of control schemes in order to accommodate players across all platforms. These controls can be changed in the Minecraft:options menu.

Java Edition

Non-configurable controls

Java Edition uses a combination of the mouse and keyboard for controls, generically known as "mouselook/keymove." Many prior games (such as DOOM and Quake) have used such a scheme, but those who have not played such a game before may need practice to get around effectively. Minecraft:Creative mode or Minecraft:Peaceful difficulty in Survival mode are helpful for a player to gain familiarity with the controls.

Action Function
Left click Pick an item up from a slot; split a stack evenly (hold and drag); sort loose items into one stack (double click).
Right click Pick an item on a slot in half; Place one item from a stack in each inventory slot (hold and drag).
Mouse Move Turning; aiming; camera movement.
Mouse Wheel Scroll Selects an Minecraft:item on the Minecraft:hotbar. Note that horizontal scrolling does nothing.

Scrolls through any Minecraft:menu screens when opened, including Minecraft:Video Settings, Minecraft:Select World screen, Minecraft:chat overlay, Minecraft:server list, etc.

Changes the Minecraft:flight speed in Minecraft:Spectator mode. Scrolling up increases the flight speed, while scrolling down decreases the flight speed.

Template:Key
Template:Key

Template:AnchorOpens up the Minecraft:pause menu and gives back cursor control. Pauses Minecraft:singleplayer games. Closes any open GUI, including but not limited to: Minecraft:chat window, Minecraft:inventory, Minecraft:crafting table, Minecraft:furnace, Minecraft:command block, Minecraft:dialog, and more.
Template:Key Toggles the Minecraft:Narrator.
Template:Key

When the Template:Key key is pressed while on the multiplayer screen, it refreshes the server list.

Template:Key When the Minecraft:inventory is open, Template:Key clicking on an Minecraft:item or stack moves it between the inventory and the hotbar.

Template:Key clicking on a piece of Minecraft:armor, a Minecraft:carved pumpkin, a Minecraft:mob head or a pair of Minecraft:elytra moves it between the inventory and the corresponding armor slot.

Template:Key clicking on a Minecraft:shield moves it between the inventory and the off-hand slot.

When a Minecraft:container is open, Template:Key clicking on an item moves up to a stack between the container and the inventory. Existing stacks are filled first, then empty slots from top to bottom then from left to right. Template:Key double clicking moves all items of the same kind. To Template:Key double click, get one item in hand, and while holding Template:Key, double click on another item type to move it.

When a Minecraft:crafting table is open, Template:Key clicking an item or stack in the inventory moves it into the 3×3 crafting grid. The slots are filled from left to right and then top to bottom.

When any type of Minecraft:furnace is open, Template:Key clicking an item or stack in the inventory moves it into the input (upper left) slot of the furnace. Items that can serve as Minecraft:fuel move to the fuel (lower left) slot.

When Minecraft:crafting, Template:Key clicking the crafting output automatically crafts the maximum number of that item for the materials being used (up to one stack), and moves all crafted items to the inventory.

In the Survival inventory tab of the Minecraft:Creative inventory, Template:Key clicking the X clears the whole inventory. In any other tab, Template:Key clicking an item puts a stack onto the hotbar.

When in the Multiplayer server selection menu, Template:Key and Template:Key moves a server name to a specific position. Holding Template:Key while a server name is selected and left clicking another server name causes them to swap.

Template:Key
Template:Key

When Minecraft:chat is open, sends the typed chat message (if it's not empty) and closes chat.

When Minecraft:Creative inventory or the Minecraft:recipe book is open, focuses the search box.

Template:Key, Template:Key When chat is open, scrolls an entire page in the given direction.

Template:Key
Template:Key

After loading a recipe from the Minecraft:recipe book to the crafting grid, press (or hold) this key to automatically refill the grid using any available materials in the inventory.

Hold Template:Key to refill entire stacks.

Menu controls

Menus out of the game and some in-game menus can be full navigated using the keyboard. Notable exception that can't be fully navigated are the various Minecraft:inventories and the Minecraft:Advancements screen.

Action Function
Template:Key, Template:Key, Template:Key, Template:Key Moves focus to the element in the given direction.
Template:Key Moves focus to the next element. Skips list items for quicker navigation.
Template:Key Moves focus to the previous element. Skips list items for quicker navigation.
Template:Key Moves to next tab in screens with tabs, such as the Minecraft:Create New World screen.
Template:Key Moves to previous tab in screens with tabs.
Template:Key, Template:Key Scrolls the focused list in the given direction.

Template:Key
Template:Key
Template:Key

Activates the focused element. This usually has the same function as left clicking it. If the focused element doesn't have an action, the main "Done" action of the current screen will be activated instead.

Sliders
When active, pressing Template:Key and Template:Key will decrease and increase the value respectively. Pressing the activation key again deactivates the active slider.

Template:Key
Template:Key

Exits the current screen.

Semi-configurable controls

While aspects of these controls can be modified to an extent, full control over them is not possible.

Default Option name Function
Movement
Template:Key Sprint (secondary) This is always the same as the current forward key. When pressed twice in quick succession, causes the Minecraft:player to Minecraft:sprint (unless the character is too hungry). Attempting to sprint (Double-Tap) while fully submerged underwater initiates swimming.

Configurable controls

Template:Info These are controls that a user may change at their preference.

Default In-game option name Keybind identifier Function
Movement
Template:Key Jump Template:Cd Minecraft:Jump. When swimming, keeps the player afloat. When double-tapped, toggles Fly Mode (Minecraft:Creative only). When Fly Mode is on, causes the player to gain Minecraft:altitude (ascend). Player flies faster if sprinting.
Template:Key Sneak Template:Cd Sneak. When Fly Mode is on, causes the player to lose Minecraft:altitude (descend) unless Template:Control is held.

Holding Template:Key and pressing Template:Control on an usable block with a block in hand overrides the USE action and places the block instead. For example, using a Minecraft:lever on a block that would usually open an internal inventory (such as a Minecraft:dispenser) places the lever instead.

Used to get off rideable entities.

Template:Key Sprint Template:Cd Start Minecraft:sprinting. Increase speed when Fly Mode is on.
Template:Key Strafe Left Template:Cd Strafe left.
Template:Key Strafe Right Template:Cd Strafe right.
Template:Key Walk Backward Template:Cd Move backward.
Template:Key Walk Forward Template:Cd Move forward. The secondary sprint is permanently tied to this.
Miscellaneous
Template:Key Advancements Template:Cd Open the Minecraft:advancements screen.
Template:Key Quick Actions Template:Cd Opens a Minecraft:dialog or a list of dialogs in the minecraft:quick_actions Minecraft:dialog tag configured by the world or server.
Template:Key Take Screenshot Template:Cd Simply pressing this key takes a screenshot and place it in:

%appdata%\.minecraft\screenshots on Windows
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/screenshots on macOS
~/.minecraft/screenshots on Linux.

Not bound Toggle Template:Va Template:Cd Toggles mouse smoothing. Looking around becomes a slow, smooth and more cinematic motion.
Template:Key Toggle Fullscreen Template:Cd Toggles full-screen mode.

When using some Apple keyboards, Template:Key must be pressed while holding Template:Key and Template:Key to enter fullscreen. Using Template:Key alone toggles Exposé, and pressing Template:Key while holding Template:Key turns down the volume or vice versa, depending on system preferences.

Some people are experiencing a bug while exiting from full-screen mode that causes an inescapable black screen. When that's the case, use Template:Key to switch out of Minecraft and switch it back to windowed mode.

On Linux, mouse input is often buggy while in full-screen mode. After entering full-screen mode on Linux, the mouse typically restricts the player to a single 360-degree rotation. This can be fixed by hitting Template:Key to release the mouse then hitting Template:Key again to regrab it.

Also, note that this may not respect multiple monitors and Minecraft may occupy all screens instead of the one it is active on.

Template:Key Toggle GUI Template:Cd Toggles the Heads-Up Display.

Use this in conjunction with Template:Key to take screenshots without the HUD. This option is also useful when exploring with a Minecraft:map.

Template:Key Toggle Perspective Template:Cd Toggles between first person, third person from the back and third person from the front.
Template:Key Toggle Spectator Shader Effects Template:Cd Toggles the currently active post-processing shader, such as screen filters when spectating as certain Minecraft:mobs.
Multiplayer
Template:Key List Players Template:Cd In Minecraft:Multiplayer, hold the Template:Key key to see a list of players.

When in the chat window, Template:Key cycles through possible commands or arguments and also complete player names.

Template:Key Open Chat Template:Cd Chat and Minecraft:server commands. If pressed while the Minecraft:Creative mode inventory is open, it switches to the Search tab.
Template:Key Open Command Template:Cd Opens the chat window with the "/" character already typed. On some keyboards (Nordic layout at least) this button might be asterisk/apostrophe: Template:Key.
Template:Key Social Interactions Screen Template:Cd Gives players the ability to disable chatting with certain players, thus hiding any messages receiving from them. Whether a player is hidden resets when re-joining a server.
Gameplay
Left click Attack/Destroy Template:Cd Destroy blocks (hold down); Attack entity (click once).
Middle click Pick Block Template:Cd Pressing that button while looking at a block or an entity makes the game attempt to put a corresponding item for the block or entity in the player's hand. For blocks, it is simply the block in item form. For mobs, the game places the corresponding spawn egg in the player's hand. This also works on Minecraft:boats, all types of Minecraft:minecarts, Minecraft:paintings, and Minecraft:armor standsTemplate:Only<ref>Template:Bug</ref> to get the entity in item form. If the item is in the hotbar, it switches the selected hotbar slot to the slot with that item. If the item is not in the hotbar, but in the player's inventory, it moves that item from the inventory into the hotbar. If no hotbar slot is empty, the item selected is replaced. In Creative mode, if the item is not in the inventory, the game gives the player that item.

Hovering over an item in any inventory and clicking with the mouse wheel when in Creative gives one full stack of that item. Dragging over slots of inventory/container while holding an item fills them with full stacks of copies of that item.

If used on a tile entity while holding Template:Key, or Template:Key (for some Mac computers), the tile entity's nbt data are copied. The block given to the player has the Lore: (+DATA)Template:Only.

Right click Use Item/Place Block Template:Cd

Place blocks, summon entities with Minecraft:spawn eggs, toggle Minecraft:levers/Minecraft:doors (click once), charge a Minecraft:bow (release to fire), Minecraft:crossbow, use crossbow, block using a Minecraft:shield, use special blocks like Minecraft:chests, Minecraft:doors, and Minecraft:levers, enter vehicles, eat Minecraft:food, drink Minecraft:potions, till Minecraft:farmland, shear or Minecraft:dye a Minecraft:sheep, command tamed Minecraft:wolves and Minecraft:cats to sit, trade with Minecraft:villagers, place Minecraft:fire using Minecraft:flint and steel or a Minecraft:fire charge, name a Minecraft:mob with a Minecraft:name tag, attach a Minecraft:lead to an animal or attach an animal on a lead to a Minecraft:fence, cast or reel in a Minecraft:fishing rod, throw a Minecraft:splash potion, Minecraft:egg, Minecraft:ender pearl, Minecraft:eye of ender, Minecraft:bottle o' enchanting, or Minecraft:snowball, equip Minecraft:armor from the hotbar if the associated armor slot is empty, eating Minecraft:cake, starting a Minecraft:furnace minecart, open Minecraft:book and quill and Minecraft:written book, use Minecraft:debug stick, add mob in a Minecraft:monster spawner.

Commonly, if both the item held and the block clicked on has a such purpose (like trying to place dirt on a chest), the block overrules the item. This also means a player can punch an entity while eating/drinking, however the eating/drinking resets when a player presses Button 1.

This button also uses items in the off-hand. Only items with a right click function can be used, and they are available only if the item in the main hand does not have a right click action, or its right click action cannot be performed.

Inventory
Template:Key Drop Selected Item Template:Cd Drop/toss an item. If Minecraft:items are stacked, only one gets thrown/tossed/dropped. In recent versions of Java Edition, holding the key causes single items to be dropped quickly from a stack. There is no actual "throw" command; "drop" (default Template:Key) tosses an object approximately 2 to 3 Minecraft:blocks from the player. Minecraft:Eggs, Minecraft:ender pearls, Minecraft:eyes of ender, and Minecraft:snowballs can be thrown by the "use" command (default right-clicking). Template:Key drops the whole stack of items.

Note that there is no corresponding Pick Up command. Dropped items are picked up (if there is room in inventory/hotbar) by moving near them. Placed items are picked up by "mining" (e.g. chopping up a sign with an axe), when they behave as dropped items and can be picked up as such.

Template:KeyTemplate:Key Hotbar Slot 1–9 Template:CdTemplate:Cd Selects the appropriate hotbar item. When in the inventory GUI, swap the contents of the inventory slot under the mouse pointer and the corresponding hotbar slot.
Template:Key Open/Close Inventory Template:Cd Opens the Minecraft:inventory. Close any open GUI.
Template:Key Swap Items In Hands Template:Cd Switches the items in the players main and off-hand. When in the inventory GUI, swap the contents of the inventory slot under the mouse pointer and the off-hand slot.
Creative Mode
Template:Key Load Toolbar Activator Template:Cd Press this key + any number, to access any of the 9 saved toolbars.
Template:Key Save Toolbar Activator Template:Cd Press this key + any number, to save the current toolbar under that number.
Spectator
Not bound Highlight Players Template:Cd Highlights players in Minecraft:Spectator mode.

Bedrock Edition

Template:IN, there are three control modes available: Keyboard & Mouse, Controller, and Touch. Keyboard & Mouse and Touch controls are not available for Nintendo Switch, although a keyboard can be used for typing and the touchscreen can be used for Minecraft:menu screens and Minecraft:GUIs. All other platforms support any control mode, but the device may not support it by default.

Whenever an input is detected from a different control mode, the game automatically switches to that control mode and enables its Minecraft:settings. The game launches with the latest selected control mode, or the device default on first launch.

Keyboard & Mouse

The keyboard and mouse controls are similar to Template:JE, with a few differences. Most keybinds can be changed in the Minecraft:settings, with a few optional settings related to the controls. Keyboard and mouse controls are unavailable on the Nintendo Switch and require external keyboards on devices without a built-in keyboard and mouse (mobile and consoles).

The game will enter keyboard & mouse mode when it receives a mouse event, but key event won't.Template:Needs testing

For blocks, it is simply the block in item form. For mobs, the game places the corresponding spawn egg in the player's hand. This also works on Minecraft:boats, all types of Minecraft:minecarts, and Minecraft:paintings (not Minecraft:armor stands<ref>Template:Bug</ref>) to get the entity in item form. If the item is in the hotbar, it switches the selected hotbar slot to the slot with that item. If the item is not in the hotbar, but in the player's inventory, it moves that item from the inventory into the hotbar. If no hotbar slot is empty, the item selected is replaced. Controller

Template:Relevant tutorial The "Controller" controls for gamepads are similar to the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 editions, with some differences. All of these controls, except the control sticks and menu controls, can be changed in the Minecraft:settings, as well as some other controller-related options. The Nintendo Switch version can be played with a pair of Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controllers, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, or the Nintendo Switch Lite. It cannot be played with a single Joy-Con or Joy-Con 2 controller, as they do not have enough buttons or control sticks. If the gamepad has two control sticks, then the left stick (Template:Xbtn/Template:Xbtn/Template:Nsbtn/Template:Psbtn/Template:Psbtn) would be used for moving and the right stick (Template:Xbtn/Template:Xbtn/Template:Nsbtn/Template:Psbtn/Template:Psbtn) would be used for looking. The blank spaces mean that the function is, by default, left unassigned and it is up to the player to assign a button to it. All platforms support gamepads.

If the connected controller loses its connection, the game hides the Minecraft:HUD and shows a message prompting to reconnect it, while the FPS is lowered. This can be disabled in the Minecraft:settings.

Touch

"Touch" controls for touchscreen devices use controls shown on the Minecraft:HUD. There are three touch control modes, and an option to split controls, resulting in four actual control modes:

  • Joystick & tap to interact. Drag joystick to move. Drag anywhere else to look around. Tap and hold blocks to interact with them.
  • Joystick & aim crosshair. Drag joystick to move. Drag anywhere else to look around. Aim Minecraft:crosshair and use buttons to interact with blocks.
  • D-pad & tap to interact. Tap arrows to move. Drag anywhere else to look around. Tap and hold blocks to interact with them.
    • Split controls: Aim crosshair and use buttons to interact with blocks.

All control buttons and the joystick can be customized in location, size, and opacity, in the Minecraft:settings, where various other touch control features can be changed.

Menu buttons always appear on the top of the screen regardless of touch control mode.

Touch controls are available on devices with a touchscreen except Nintendo Switch, where the touchscreen can only be used to interact with the hotbar, inventory, and menus. This can also be enabled for other devices.

The game will enter touch mode when it receives a touch event.Template:Needs testing

Note: For Xperia Play owners using the gamepad, while in Creative mode, the lowest two rows of items are beneath the screen, and one cannot scroll down to see them. They are still accessible, but it requires either remembering how many times one has to press the directional buttons to access them, or trial-and-error. This is most prominent in the 4.0 update, as the amount of items has increased, and now sixteen items are hidden. The only way to see them is to turn on the option to use touch controls in the options menu.
