Template:Infobox guide This guide is a simplified overview of all the changes in the Minecraft:Adventure Update: Part I (Template:JE Beta 1.8.x releases), which assumes at least some familiarity with Beta 1.7.x releases and the Adventure Update: Part II (Java Edition 1.0.x releases).

Mobs

New

  • If a player "stares" at it, it attacks the player.
  • Has the ability to teleport, and periodically do so while attacking.
  • In this version, it doesn't teleport away before being hit by an arrow.
  • In this version, it burns from daylight.
  • Can pick up most full blocks.
  • It is harmed when in contact with water.
Minecraft:Silverfish File:Silverfish JE1 BE1.gif Minecraft:Strongholds Template:Xp (when killed by a player or tamed wolf)
  • Spawns when Minecraft:monster eggs are broken. These can be found in strongholds.
  • Attacking one causes nearby monster eggs to break and spawn other silverfish.
  • Can enter stone, cobblestone or stone brick blocks, turning them into monster eggs.

Changed

General Template:Animate
  • Animals no longer despawn which makes it possible to capture them. Minecraft:Breeding, however, has not been implemented yet.
  • Minecraft:Arrows that hit a Minecraft:mob visually "stick" into the mob rather than just disappear.
  • Passive mobs randomly flee if attacked by the player or other mobs (such as Minecraft:wolves).
  • Now drop experience when killed by a player or a tamed wolf.

  • They now hold bows more realistically. Previously, it looked like they were holding a regular 3D item.
  • Skeleton arrows originate from about their eyes to the bow, instead of above the head.
Minecraft:Zombie File:Zombie JE1.png Now drop Minecraft:rotten flesh instead of Minecraft:feathers.

Minecraft:Monster Eggs Template:Animate Stone brick monster eggs generate in strongholds. Any (does not drop any items)
  • Spawn a silverfish when broken.
  • Silverfish can enter regular blocks of stone, cobblestone, or stone bricks and turn them into the respective monster egg variant.
  • In this version, they can only be obtained via Minecraft:commands.

  • Drop mushrooms of the same color.
  • Not obtainable without commands in this version.
Melon and
Minecraft:Pumpkin Stems
Template:Animate Created by planting the corresponding seeds on farmland. Any Mature stems randomly grow melons or pumpkins on adjacent farmland blocks.

  • Fully grown melon stems generate a melon on adjacent farmland.

Minecraft:Food
  • Eating food now restores hunger instead of health.
  • All food items (except mushroom stew) are now stackable.
  • Now takes 1.6 seconds to consume, accompanied with an animation.

  • Behavior has been overhauled; it needs to be charged in order to fire.
    • Arrows from bows now deal damage in accordance with the charging time.

Minecraft:Village File:Village Beta 1.8.png No None Clusters of buildings made from oak wood and cobblestone connected by pathways. Villages are uninhabited, as villagers have not been implemented yet.
Minecraft:Huge Mushrooms Template:Animate Grown by players by using Minecraft:bone meal on small Minecraft:mushrooms. No None The giant forms of Minecraft:mushrooms.
Minecraft:Ravine File:Water in Ravine.png Underground No None Long and tall cracks that carve a large empty space into the earth.
Minecraft:Mineshaft File:Abandoned Mineshaft Chest.png Underground Chests are randomly scattered throughout the structure. Minecraft:Cave spiders from spawners, other monsters from natural spawning. Maze-like tunnel systems filled with wooden supports and minecart rails.
Minecraft:Stronghold File:Stronghold library Beta 1.8.png Underground Chests can be found in multiple different types of rooms. Minecraft:Silverfish from monster eggs, other monsters from natural spawning.
  • Large subterranean fortresses made from stone bricks and other materials.
  • In this version, the End portal room hasn't been implemented yet.

Biomes

An entirely new terrain generator has been added. Minecraft:Biomes are generally larger and more distinct, and the terrain is overall flatter (with the exception of extreme hills).

  • Large bodies of water now generate as a proper biome.
  • Deeper and vaster than before.
  • Floor is now made up of sand, dirt, and clay.
  • Clay is now more commonly found due to this.

Gameplay

New

Minecraft:Creative mode A new game mode in which the player can fly, cannot take damage, can break any block instantly, and has an inventory containing an infinite supply of most blocks and items.
Minecraft:Flying A new ability available in Creative mode, activated by double-tapping the Template:Control key.
Minecraft:Sprinting Double-tapping the Template:Control key allows you to move faster at the cost of losing Minecraft:hunger.
Minecraft:Hunger Food no longer instantly heals, but instead fills up a hunger bar. When at least 9 of the 10 "shanks" are filled, health slowly regenerates. Sprinting and regenerating health drains hunger.
Minecraft:Experience Killing mobs gives you experience points. Experience doesn't have a use yet.
Minecraft:Effects Temporary alterations that can affect mobs and players. Most of these are unobtainable, except for:

Changed

Minecraft:Controls
  • Holding the left mouse button with a weapon now only swings once.
  • Holding the right mouse button to place blocks is slightly slower than before.
  • Template:Key+clicking the output item in a crafting square crafts all the items at once, and automatically places them in the inventory.
  • Player list in multiplayer, defaults to Template:Key.
Minecraft:Clouds
  • Height raised to the top of the map.
  • Can no longer phase through blocks.
  • Movement now syncs with the game's time.
Minecraft:Damage Unarmed damage has been decreased from Template:Hp to Template:Hp (reverting to the behavior from before Minecraft:Beta 1.5).
Minecraft:Daylight cycle
  • No longer requires chunk updates and is a smooth transition.
  • A few tweaks to sunrise and sunset.
Minecraft:Farming Changed to be less volatile.
HUD
  • Armor bar moved to above hearts, due to addition of the hunger bar.
  • The version tag is shown outside of the debug screen again.
Minecraft:Lighting
  • Implemented dynamic lighting; the brightness color on a block is given a tint based on the most prominent source of light.
  • Block light sources (such as Minecraft:torches or Minecraft:lava) emit a yellow-orange light, while skylight has a blue tint during nights.
  • Ambient light value for the Minecraft:Overworld has been changed from 0.05 to 0.0.
Minecraft:Multiplayer The 'Multiplayer join screen' has been improved, mainly with a Minecraft:server list.
Minecraft:Weather Minecraft:Rain and Minecraft:snow now render faster.
