Minecraft:Java Edition 1.1

1.1 is a major update to Template:JE released on January 12, 2012,<ref>Template:Cite</ref> which adds Minecraft:spawn eggs, support for multiple Minecraft:languages, the Minecraft:Superflat world type, and reintroduces Minecraft:beaches. It is the first update to begin using Minecraft:snapshots, to add support for other languages, and the first of only two major releases that did not introduce any new blocks, second being Minecraft:Java Edition 1.18.

There were no subsequent minor versions to 1.1. It was the first version to be released under Minecraft:Jens Bergensten as the lead creative developer of Minecraft. This is also the first version released in 2012.

Template:Animate Minecraft:Spawn eggs

• Spawns mobs when Template:Control.
• 20 types of spawn eggs, each spawning their respective mob:
  • The types were Minecraft:blaze, Minecraft:cave spider, Minecraft:chicken, Minecraft:cow, Minecraft:creeper, Minecraft:enderman, Minecraft:ghast, Minecraft:magma cube, Minecraft:mooshroom, Minecraft:pig, Minecraft:sheep, Minecraft:silverfish, Minecraft:skeleton, Minecraft:slime, Minecraft:spider, Minecraft:squid, Minecraft:villager, Minecraft:wolf, Minecraft:zombie, and Minecraft:zombie pigman.

World generation

Minecraft:World types

• Re-added world types after being removed in Infdev.
• The "World Type" button now functions.
  • Currently the only types are "Default" and "Superflat".

Minecraft:Biomes

• Template:BiomeLink
  • Re-added beaches after being removed in Beta 1.8.
    • Are now separate Minecraft:biomes instead of features.

  • Hills variant of Minecraft:desert.

  • Frozen variant of Minecraft:oceans, similar to Minecraft:frozen rivers only the same depth as regular oceans. They also generate around snowy plains biomes.

Minecraft:Enchanting

Blocks

Minecraft:Farmland

• Farmland can now only be trampled if the Minecraft:player jumps/falls on it; Minecraft:walking no longer affects it.
• Minecraft:Mobs can similarly trample farmland by jumping on it, but not by walking.

Minecraft:Fence gates

• The collision box on fence gates now matches that of Minecraft:fences.
• Fence gates can now be opened and closed using Minecraft:redstone.

Minecraft:Ladders

• Removed collision box from ladders.

Minecraft:Melons and pumpkins

• Can now grow onto dirt instead of only Minecraft:farmland.

Items

Minecraft:Apples

• Now have a Template:Frac (0.5%) chance of dropping from Minecraft:oak leaves.

Minecraft:Armor

• The durability of all types of armor has been increased.<ref group=note name="Release change">This change occurred between the last development version for 1.1, 12w01a, and the full release of 1.1.</ref>

Minecraft:Golden apples

• Golden apples now restore Template:Hunger and provide Minecraft:Regeneration I for 5 seconds.<ref group=note name="Release change" />
• The recipe has been reduced to use Minecraft:gold nuggets instead of Minecraft:gold blocks.<ref group=note name="Release change" />

Minecraft:Music discs

• All of the music discs, except for "11", can now be obtained when a Minecraft:skeleton kills a Minecraft:creeper.

Minecraft:Wheat

• The distance that wheat attracts mobs has increased from 2–3 blocks to 8–9 blocks.<ref group=note name="Release change" />

Mobs

Mob AI

• Added the infrastructure for improved mob AI.
  • Allowed for more complicated behavior than before.
  • These behaviors themselves have not been implemented yet.<ref group=note name="Release change" />

Minecraft:Magma cubes

• Can now drop magma cream upon death.<ref group=note name="Release change" />

Minecraft:Sheep

• Can now eat Minecraft:grass blocks and Minecraft:short grass to regrow their Minecraft:wool.
• Baby sheep now eat faster than before.
• Sheep now drop 1–3 wool per shearing rather than 2-4.

Non-mob entities

Minecraft:Arrows

• Arrows that are burning now set Minecraft:entities on fire when hit.<ref group=note name="Release change" />

World generation

Minecraft:Biomes

• Biomes have more varied elevations of land in previously flatter biomes.
  • These biomes include desert, forest, and taiga.
• Smoothed color transitions between biomes.
  • Minecraft:Swampland grass, foliage, and water smoothly transition into other biomes.

Minecraft:Taiga

• Changed temperature value from 0.3 to 0.05, making taigas generate with snow again.

Minecraft:Villages

• Blacksmith buildings in villages now have a chest that contains loot.

Gameplay

Minecraft:Brewing

• Reduced brewing time from 30 seconds to 20 seconds.

Minecraft:Enchanting

• Narrowed the various possibility of enchantment levels.

Minecraft:Void

• Removed the void fog in creative mode.
• Removed the void fog in the nether and the end.<ref group=note name="Release change" />

Minecraft:Chat

• Players can now enter Minecraft:formatting codes in chat to obfuscate the text and change its color.<ref group=note name="Release change" /><ref group=note name="Reverted in 12w04a">This change was silently reverted in the 12w04a development snapshot for 1.2.1.</ref>
• Minecraft:Formatting code §k no longer makes obfuscated texts switch color randomly between Template:Color and Template:Color.

General

Minecraft:Pause menu

• Renamed the "Save and quit to title" button to "Save and Quit to Title".

Minecraft:Servers

• Non-operator users now get auto-kicked in multiplayer servers if they spam in chat too much.<ref group=note name="Release change" />
  • Operators are not notified of the kick; they must check through external tools such as the server console or through Minecraft:server.jar.
• Added disconnect message disconnect.spam.<ref group=note name="Release change" />

Fixes

3 bugs fixed

• Fixed "Sniper Duel" achievement not working.
• Fixed Minecraft:powered rails not depowering.
• Fixed Minecraft:powered rails not updating when placed.

Videos

An official video documenting some of the 1.1's major features was released on Mojang's official Minecraft:YouTube channel on January 12, 2012. The video was made by Hat Films, who have made update trailers and videos for Mojang in the past. Template:Yt

Trivia

• The client JAR file erroneously includes uncompiled Java source files for the isometric preview applet under the directory isom. The files are:
