The Horse Update is the name for Template:El 1.6.1, a major update released on July 1, 2013.<ref>Template:Cite</ref> It added new features such as Minecraft:horses, Minecraft:leads, Minecraft:coal blocks, Minecraft:carpets, Minecraft:resource packs and a new Minecraft:launcher.

Development began the month after 1.5.1 was released. Eighteen development snapshots were released, from Template:Verlink to Template:Verlink. During the development period, 1.5.2 was released. Several iterations of the fourth launcher were released during this time period, from 0.1 to 1.2.2. Nearer the end of the snapshot cycle for the 1.6 update, Mojang focused primarily on fixing bugs, rather than adding new features.

The official name for the update, the Horse Update – was announced a week prior to the 1.6 prerelease on the Minecraft update tumblr (which is viewed in the launcher).

Mojang released the 1.6 pre-release on June 25, 2013. This included an Minecraft:easter egg where mobs named "Dinnerbone" or "Grumm" were flipped upside down. The 1.6.1 pre-release was released on June 28, 2013, three days before the final release.

  • Comes in iron, gold, and diamond.
  • Found in dungeons, Minecraft:Nether fortresses, desert temples, and jungle temples.
  • Used to give protection to Minecraft:horses.
  • Cannot be used on Minecraft:donkeys or Minecraft:mules.

  • Used to leash mobs around.
  • Can be attached to a Minecraft:fence.

New Minecraft:mobs

• Template:Animate Minecraft:Horses
  • Rideable mobs found in Minecraft:plains in small groups.
  • Has to be tamed by repeatedly riding the horse, subsequently getting thrown off, until the horse shows heart particles.
    • Can be tamed easier by feeding the horse Minecraft:bread, Minecraft:sugar, Minecraft:hay bales, Minecraft:wheat, Minecraft:apples, Minecraft:golden apples, or Minecraft:golden carrots.
  • Upon taming, a Minecraft:saddle is required to ride the horse.
    • Players can also put on Minecraft:horse armor for protection.
  • Stats (health, speed, and jump height) and color vary between horses.
  • Can be bred using Minecraft:golden apples or Minecraft:golden carrots
  • Drops Minecraft:leather when killed.

  • Rideable mobs found in Minecraft:plains in small groups.
  • Has similar functionality to the horse, but has the ability to put on a Minecraft:chest for storage access.

New Minecraft:gameplay

• Minecraft:Resource pack
  • Completely replaced Minecraft:texture packs.
  • Allows modifying not only texture, but also sounds, music, font, text, and languages.
• New Minecraft:effects:

    • Occurs after eating a Minecraft:golden apple or Minecraft:enchanted golden apple.
    • Grants the player Template:Hp additional health that cannot be replenished.
    • Upon taking damage, absorption health is depleted first before the player's main health.

    • Can be given only by commands.
    • Grants the player Template:Hp that can be filled up.
    • Extra health disappears once the effect is over.

    • Can be given only by commands.
    • Grants the player Template:Hunger hunger per every tick.

Other additions

• Item and entity Minecraft:attributes.
• 2 new Minecraft:commands and 2 new sub-commands to Template:Cmd

Notable changes

• New and improved Minecraft:launcher.
• Better Minecraft:chat system.
• Riding mobs tweaked.
• Blocks can no longer be broken with a Minecraft:sword in Minecraft:Creative mode.
• Retextured Minecraft:charcoal and Minecraft:lapis lazuli block.
• Minecraft:Zombies now target the player from further away, and can summon other zombies.
• Minecraft:Villagers now make sounds.

Further revisions

• 1.6.2 enabling spawning of baby zombies and baby zombie pigmen.
• 1.6.4 fixed a bug where structures were not being saved to the world file.

Trivia

• This is the last version for the third launcher available.
• Because of the new launcher, this version of the game became the first that could auto-update itself.
• In the update poster, the then-unused nitwit or "generic villager" can be seen next to an Minecraft:iron golem, along with an unknown blue robed villager.
