Minecraft:Java Edition guides/Nether Update

This guide is a simplified overview of all changes in the Minecraft:Nether Update (Template:JE 1.16.x releases), which assumes at least some familiarity with the Minecraft:Buzzy Bees update (Java Edition 1.15.x releases).

Mobs

Minecraft:Bee	File:Bee.gif	Reduced the maximum distance a bee can wander away from its home hive when randomly wandering to around 22 blocks. Grow up and count down their breeding cool down when inside a beehive.
Minecraft:Cows	File:Cow JE5 BE2.png	Can now be milked in Minecraft:Creative mode.
Minecraft:Endermen	File:Enderman JE2.png	Spawn in the Nether more commonly again, especially in Minecraft:warped forests. Now pick up Minecraft:nylium, Minecraft:crimson roots, Minecraft:warped roots, and Minecraft:Nether fungi variants. No longer pick up Minecraft:netherrack.
Minecraft:Ghast	File:Ghast JE2 BE2.gif	Sounds are now heard at a shorter range.
Minecraft:Mooshrooms	Template:Animate	Can now be milked in Creative mode. Mushroom stew and suspicious stew can also be obtained in Creative mode.
Minecraft:Parrots	Template:Animate	Imitate hostile mobs less often. No longer randomly imitate hostile mobs on Peaceful difficulty.
Minecraft:Snow golems	File:Snow Golem.png	Are now damaged by splash and lingering water bottles. Now drop Minecraft:carved pumpkin when they are sheared.
Minecraft:Villagers	Template:Animate	When any villager is struck by lightning, the witch it is converted to no longer despawns, regardless of whether the villager had been traded with or not.
Farmer Minecraft:villagers	Template:Animate	Can now put seeds in the Minecraft:composter to create Minecraft:bone meal. Can now use bone meal to grow crops.
Minecraft:Wither	File:Wither.png	Can now be summoned using Minecraft:soul soil in the base.
Minecraft:Zombie pigmen	Template:Animate	Renamed to "zombified piglin" and given a new Minecraft:model and texture. Now also spawn rarely in Minecraft:crimson forests. No longer attack players who have not attacked a zombified piglin. Now stop being angry if the targeted player dies nearby. (But only if gamerule forgiveDeadPlayers is set to true)

Minecraft:Ancient debris	File:Ancient Debris.png	Found in the Nether, but is extremely rare. Never generates exposed to air, and is most common between Y levels 8 and 22.	Pickaxe (diamond or better)	Can be smelted into Minecraft:netherite scrap. Can be used in blast-resistant doors, as it can't be destroyed by TNT or creepers, but it can be pushed by Minecraft:pistons.
Minecraft:Block of netherite	File:Block of Netherite.png		Pickaxe (diamond or better)	Can be used decoratively, as a storage block for Minecraft:netherite ingots, or as part of a blast-resistant wall/door. Can be used in the base of a beacon.

Minecraft:Basalt	File:Basalt.png	Found in the Nether making up Minecraft:basalt pillars within Minecraft:soul sand valley biomes. Minecraft:Basalt deltas contain an abundance of basalt blocks, as it is one of the main blocks that form the biome. Formed when lava flows over Minecraft:soul soil next to Minecraft:blue ice. Minecraft:Stripped crimson stem and Minecraft:stripped warped stem	Template:Animate	Created by right-clicking on a stem with an axe.	Axe	Can be used as a building block.
Minecraft:Stripped crimson hyphae and Minecraft:stripped warped hyphae	Template:Animate	Created by right-clicking on a hyphae with an axe.	Axe	Can be used as a building block.

Only four charges can be set at once, and one is used up for every respawn. Respawn anchor can be recharged with Minecraft:glowstone. Respawn anchor emits 4 different light levels depending on what charge it is at. Explodes if used in the Minecraft:Overworld or Minecraft:End. Can be charged with a dispenser.
Minecraft:Soul soil	File:Soul Soil JE1 BE1.png	Generates in the soul sand valley, alongside conventional soul sand.	Shovel	Fire lit on soul soil appears as soul fire. The player does not sink and is not slowed when walking on soul soil. Soul soil can be used to summon the Minecraft:wither.
Minecraft:Soul fire	File:Soul Fire.gif	Generates naturally in the soul sand valley biome in the Nether. Fire lit on soul soil is soul fire regardless of dimension. Chain	File:Chain.png		Pickaxe	Can be used decoratively. Can be used to suspend Minecraft:bells and both types of Minecraft:lanterns.
Minecraft:Target	File:Target.png		Hoe	Emits a redstone signal for 1 second when hit with most projectiles. The closer a projectile hits to the center, the stronger the signal it gives off.

Minecraft:Bone block	Template:Animate	Now generates as part of Minecraft:nether fossils in Minecraft:soul sand valleys. Now has its own Minecraft:sound, instead of using the Minecraft:stone sound.
Minecraft:Campfire	File:Campfire.gif	Campfires now ignite when hit by any burning projectile.
Minecraft:Dispenser	File:Dispenser.png	Can now saddle Minecraft:pigs, Minecraft:striders, and tamed Minecraft:horses, Minecraft:donkeys and Minecraft:mules. Can now put Minecraft:horse armor on tamed horses. Can now put carpets on tamed Minecraft:llamas. Can now put chests on tamed llamas, donkeys, and mules. Can now shear Minecraft:mooshrooms and Minecraft:snow golems. Now displays a new death message: [player] went off with a bang due to a firework fired from [item] by [player/mob]
Minecraft:Fire	File:Fire.gif	Now has a proper hitbox (Template:Frac Minecraft:blocks). Can no longer be put out by Minecraft:swords or Minecraft:tridents in Minecraft:Creative mode, akin to other Minecraft:blocks, and can be modified via the Minecraft:debug stick. Now has Minecraft:loot tables.
Minecraft:Flower pot	Template:Animate	Now has a bottom texture.
Minecraft:Gravel	File:Gravel.png	Now generates naturally in all nether biomes at the lava level.
Minecraft:Jigsaw block	File:Jigsaw Block.png	Can now have one of 12 orientations. Now has a new "Keep Jigsaws" option that controls whether jigsaw blocks in the resulting structure after using "Generate" remain as jigsaw blocks, or are replaced by their "Turns Into" block. Defaults to "ON".
Minecraft:Lantern	File:Lantern.gif	Can now be waterlogged.
Minecraft:Lava	File:Lava.gif	Now pushes Minecraft:entities.
Minecraft:Nether wart block	File:Nether Wart Block JE3.png	Now generates as a part of huge crimson fungi. The texture of nether wart block is slightly changed.
Minecraft:Netherrack	File:Netherrack JE4 BE2.png	Using Minecraft:bone meal on netherrack adjacent to Minecraft:nylium converts it into nylium. If two nylium blocks of different types are present, it chooses the type at random based on how many Minecraft:blocks of each type are around it.
Minecraft:Observer and Minecraft:block of redstone	Template:Animate	Observers and blocks of redstone now allow placing of Minecraft:ladders and Minecraft:tripwire hooks.
Minecraft:Redstone dust	File:Redstone Dust.png	A single redstone wire is now represented as a cross. Redstone provides power to blocks on sides it shows a visual connection to, and not do so on those sides without a visual connection. A wire on top of a block, which is redirected from below, now powers the sides it is redirected to. Wires that redirect upward to wires on non-conductive blocks used to only be redirected visually, now this redirection applies to their behavior as well. A wire that is redirected to go over a block now always provides power to the block. This is most noticeable when the wire has signal strength 1. Hitbox now adjusts to its shape. Now visually connects when traveling up soul sand and 8-layer snow stacks. Now visually connects when going up the back (including far-side) of Minecraft:stairs. Particles are now generated across the entire area of the redstone dust. (Fixed bug: MC-181566)
Minecraft:Smithing table	File:Smithing Table.png	Now has a GUI. Can now be used to upgrade diamond gear to Minecraft:netherite.
Minecraft:Snow	File:Snow Block.png	Minecraft:Doors, Minecraft:rails, Minecraft:buttons, Minecraft:torches, Minecraft:pressure plates and Minecraft:redstone can now be placed on a full-block of snow layers.
Minecraft:Soul sand	File:Soul Sand.png	Now generates in soul sand valley biomes at the lava level of the lava ocean. Soul sand with a rail on top no longer slows down Minecraft:minecarts. Doors, buttons, torches, pressure plates and redstone can now be placed on soul sand.
Minecraft:Structure block	File:Structure Block.png	A structure block's maximum size per axis now expands to 48.
Minecraft:TNT	File:TNT.png	Now ignite when hit by any burning projectile.
Minecraft:Vines	File:Vines.png	Now play a Minecraft:sound when climbed.
Minecraft:Wall	Template:Animate	Walls in the middle of a row have longer pillars when stacked vertically. Minecraft:Block state now uses Template:Cd for Template:Cd directional values.

Netherite Minecraft:armor	Template:Animate		Does not burn in lava. Floats on lava. Tougher than diamond armor. Have higher durability and enchantability than diamond.
Minecraft:Netherite axe, hoe, pickaxe, shovel, and sword	Template:Animate		Does not burn in lava. Floats on lava. All items, except the hoe, deal 1 more damage than their diamond counterparts. Have higher durability, mining level, breaking multiplier, and enchantability than diamond.
Minecraft:Warped fungus on a stick	File:Warped Fungus on a Stick JE1 BE1.png		Can be used to control striders. Functions similarly with striders as Minecraft:carrot on a stick separately would with Minecraft:pigs.
Minecraft:Spawn eggs (Minecraft:Hoglin/Minecraft:piglin/Minecraft:strider/Minecraft:zoglin/Minecraft:piglin brute)	Template:Animate	Can be obtained only via creative inventory.	Have the same function as any other spawn egg.

Minecraft:Compass	File:Lodestone Compass JE1.gif	Using a compass on a Minecraft:lodestone creates a lodestone compass, which points to that block. Can now be enchanted with Minecraft:Curse of Vanishing.
All Minecraft:hoes	Template:Animate	Each tier now has a different speed at which it mines Minecraft:blocks it is effective against. Can now be enchanted with Minecraft:Efficiency, Minecraft:Fortune, and Minecraft:Silk Touch through the enchanting table. Are now the appropriate tools for mining Minecraft:hay bales, Minecraft:targets, Minecraft:dried kelp blocks, Minecraft:sponges, Minecraft:wet sponges, Minecraft:leaves, Minecraft:shroomlights, Minecraft:nether wart blocks, and Minecraft:warped wart blocks.

Biomes

Minecraft:Soul sand valley	File:Soulsand Valley.png	An open space made mostly of Minecraft:soul sand and Minecraft:soul soil. Basalt pillars span from floor to ceiling. Nether fossils generate across the valley. Ash falls through the air. A light blue glow envelopes the valley. Minecraft:Ghasts and Minecraft:skeletons traverse the valley. Minecraft:Soul sand can be found in this biome at the lava level of the lava ocean. Biome-exclusive Minecraft:ambient sounds can be heard within the valley. The Minecraft:music track 'So Below' composed by Lena Raine plays inside this biome.	Minecraft:Nether fossils Minecraft:Basalt pillars
Minecraft:Warped forest	File:Warped Forest.png	Minecraft:Warped nylium carpets the cave floor with Minecraft:nether sprouts and Minecraft:warped fungi growing throughout the biome. Minecraft:Huge crimson fungi grow abundantly throughout the biome, providing Minecraft:crimson stems and Minecraft:shroomlights, as well as Minecraft:nether wart blocks. Minecraft:Weeping vines often grow down from the nether wart blocks on the huge crimson fungi. A red fog covers the entirety of the biome. Red ashes and particles often flow through the air.
